The East
Rising steeply from its picturesque harbour, the capital, St Peter Port, looks out over Guernsey’s sister islands of Herm, Sark and Jethou. The historic architecture, cobbled streets and alleys of the old town are home to shops both big and small, museums and restaurants to satisfy the most discerning palette. Victor Hugo could still recognise much of the place where he completed his classic ‘ Les Miserables’ and where the Castle Cornet still protects the harbour, a safe haven for commercial and pleasure craft as well as being home to the fishing fleet.
Fermain Bay lies at the bottom of a beautiful wooded valley. The Moorings, on the northern side of the entrance to the bay, is a perfect spot for swimming and diving in deep water. Soldier’s Bay gained its name from the neighbouring Fort George garrison. South of St Peter Port is Havelet Bay, protected by Castle Cornet. To the north is Belle Greve Bay sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds.
